Cape Town - Research In Motion has revealed the date that it will introduce BlackBerry 10 to the world.

RIM announced on Monday that the anticipated platform will be launched on 30 January 2013 as well as two new smartphones.

"BlackBerry 10 will offer a large catalogue of the leading applications from across the globe and across all categories, including Games, Productivity, Social, Lifestyle and Leisure, Multimedia and Published Content, as well as applications designed for business and enterprise use," RIM said.

The company is under pressure to lure back consumers in the US and Europe who have deserted the brand in favour of sleek gadgets powered by Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhone.

RIM co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie resigned in 2012 and new CEO Thorsten Heins announced that the company would focus on its core corporate strength.

Heins talked up the strength of the new platform that has been granted Fips (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification.

"Thanks to our strong partnerships with global carriers and a growing ecosystem of developers, we believe our customers will have the best experience possible with BlackBerry 10."

Some analysts have criticised RIM for pushing back the release date of BlackBerry 10, arguing that the company should have had the platform ready for the holiday season.

RIM has been on a mission to entice developers to produce apps for the ecosystem and the company has conducted several BlackBerry Jam events as it races to catch up to the extensive app stores of its rivals.
