Durban – A new internet cloud-based solution for small business promises to allow for easy and controlled deployment of online data management.

Internet cloud provider Global Micro announced on the side-lines of the TechEd developer conference in Durban that the Virtual Filing Cabinet can potentially simplify the cloud-based data management for small and medium enterprises.

“The technology we employ to provide local Cloud hosting to customers is incredibly flexible and it can be hosted on our local servers or on your own data centre infrastructure,” said JJ Milner, managing director for Global Micro Solutions.

The growth of BYOD (Bring your own device) has prompted many network administrators to consider policies to cope with the variety of technology and mobile platforms on corporate networks, while at the same time, ensuring that users have easy access to their files.

“People want to be able to access these tools on whatever device they have. So whether you’re with a big company, a small company, public sector – it doesn’t really matter – you want to be able to get your stuff,” Joel E Allan CEO of Allenport told News24.

Control

Allenport developed the Virtual Filing Cabinet private cloud service which has the ease of usability of public platforms.

Global Micro Solutions said that hosting the servers locally adds a degree on control for users as the service could be customised for local conditions.

“By using international services, business data will fall under the jurisdiction of that country making it nearly impossible to manage from a legal point of view,” the company said of the challenges of international cloud offerings for business use.

Unlike some cloud platforms, the data on the Virtual Filing Cabinet is encrypted at the client so that only the user has the keys.

“When you use a public cloud service, you’ve only got so much control, but if you use some of these customised services – private cloud services, now you’ve got the opportunity” for more control, said Allan.

In comparing public cloud services to the propriety one, Allan said that traditional sharing practices was inherently insecure because of usability.

“Just because you can do that it means that it’s not very secure: You don’t have to enter a password; it’s in the clear, as they say.”

Responsibility

He added that the data encryption of the Virtual Filing Cabinet heightened security and gave the user more control to share.

“What we do with our service is we encrypt at the client – at the PC, the iPad – whatever device you’re using. We compress that data and then we ship it, encrypted,” said Allan.

He warned though, that the system meant that the user had final responsibility of the data because even though it is stored on the Global Micro servers, the encryption keys reside only with the users.

“The bad part is if you forget your password; you forget all your user questions, you’ve got big trouble. That’s the trade-off, right?”
