Cape Town - A local computer expert is on his way to New York to compete with the top boffins in the field.

Rijnard van Tonder, an MSc student at the MIH Media Lab and in the Computer Science division of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stellenbosch University, is one of 43 contestants from around the world to go head-to-head in the IBM Master the Mainframe World Championship.

The event is designed to pit the best university students against each other to test their technical skills.

On 10 March, students competed in the final round where they had to demonstrate problem solving capability with online workloads and mainframe systems programming.

Van Tonder will join his colleagues in New York City on 5 April where he will showcase his application to a panel of judges, with the winners being announced three days later.
