Cape Town - A South African inventor has won a prestigious competition designed to highlight innovation in Africa.

Dr Nicolaas Duneas and Nuno Pires won $100 000 for the Altis Osteogenic Bone Matrix - an injectable bone-graft product made from pigs and it can be used to stimulate a person's tissue regeneration process.

The product can play a significant role in treating bone injuries and makes implants redundant .

The African Innovation Foundation (AIF) also announced two runners up: Logou Minsob from Togo received honours for a process to create Foufou, a traditional dish and Melesse Temesgen from Ethiopia won a special prize for developing a low-cost farming device that drains excess water from fields.

The Innovation Prize for Africa rewards inventors on the continent who come up with technology solutions that make can improve the lives of people.

Duneas was part of a four member South African contingent in the finalists chosen from over 700 entries from 42 countries.

The awards coincide with the World Economic Forum meeting in West Africa which will focus on growth and creating employment in Africa.
