Cape Town - Samsung devices are growing in popularity as the ideal smartphone platform if results from an online classifieds site are anything to go by.

According to eBay-owned Gumtree, people with Samsung smartphones now make up 43% of ad posts, up from 32% a year ago.

Gumtree believes that the shift to Samsung from BlackBerry and Nokia underlines the popularity of the Android platform as a vehicle to access internet services.

Android powers around 80% of smartphones globally according to research from Gartner, and Samsung has a market share of 31%.

The classifieds provider has been on an effort to raise its profile in SA with a significant marketing campaign and insists that print publications for classifieds is a dead model in the country.

"The future is online - it's not just what customers expect but what they demand. While there is still a market for print it will be hard to sustain in the longer term," said Claire Cobbledick, Gumtree SA marketing head.

The growth of online classifieds has seen a gutting of traditional print classified advertising.

Beyond the reduction of the classifieds section in newspapers, dedicated classifieds publications like Junkmail have taken the business online.

Cobbledick said that the platform was intent on growing in SA and beyond, putting it into direct competition with Junkmail and OLX.

"Gumtree is growing the classifieds experience and tests new offerings in different markets. While new products and offerings are a closely guarded secret, users can already see that we are working to build out and improve on the mobile buying and selling experience."

Some of the strategies used on classifieds platforms include seller reviews or ratings, social network logins and sharing tools, and the option to add video.

Cobbledick though, insisted that Gumtree was committed to ensuring a simple and easy user experience.

"Ultimately our core principles require classifieds to be simple and easy for users with no barriers to entry. In keeping with this philosophy we take great care to ensure we make the site as frictionless as possible and keep with as few barriers to use as possible."
