Samsung launches Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy Club launched the new S4 smartphone at SXSW in Austin, Texas on Thursday. See all the pictures.

Cape Town - Samsung is preparing to release the anticipated Galaxy S4 in SA and the company has sent media invitations for a launch event in Johannesburg.

The South Korean giant manufacturer sent media invitations for the launch of the S4 on 26 April as the company looks to capitalise on the success of the previous model, the SIII.

Mobile operators Vodacom, MTN and Cell C have already announced that they will be carrying the Galaxy S4 with pre-order forms set up on the respective websites.

The companies are running the campaign as a play on the name of the device with the caption: "Be ready 4 the next Galaxy."

Prices are expected to be announced shortly after the launch as Samsung fires back at rivals who have raced to release smartphones ahead of the S4 to try and grab market share.

Repair

HTC released its One smartphone with an all-aluminium body and new camera technology, while Sony launched its Xperia Z which is both water resistant and durable.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 13 megapixel main camera, similar to the Xperia, and the 12.7cm display is protected by Gorilla Glass.

Samsung has opted for Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) as the operating system on the S4 and it is powered by a 1.6GHz Cortex-A15 quad core processor.

One reason the S4 might have the edge over rivals is that it is easier to repair.

According to the Techno Buffalo website that conducted a teardown of the device, the components of the S4 are easier to replace than the previous model.

"So here's what we've learned: the Samsung Galaxy S4 is very easy to repair, almost infinitely easier than the unibody aluminium HTC One," said Techno Buffalo, though the site cautioned that the Gorilla Glass might be broken during the procedure.

Samsung is hoping that the S4 exceeds the sales records of its predecessor. The SIII reached sales of 100 million units in 100 days and reports suggest that it topped 200 000 in SA.
