Cape Town – The Ster-Kinekor mobile application has passed over 200 000 downloads, the entertainment company announced.

The app is designed to help movie goers with the cinema experience by accessing seating information and viewing synopses and trailers for films.

Since launching the application in September, it has been downloaded more than 200 000 times, mainly on BlackBerry devices.

The fact that the BlackBerry version of the Ster-Kinekor app has reached this download milestone so quickly is testament to the power of smart user-friendly design,” said Lynette Hundermark, head of product strategy at Prezence Digital, the company that built the application.

Despite the international tend away from BlackBerry devices and the exponential growth of Android-powered devices in particular, the BlackBerry brand is strong in SA with around half of all smartphones sold running on BlackBerry software.

Hype

According to research from independent ad network InMobi, devices made by Research In Motion (RIM) dominate the South African cellphone landscape.

RIM is on a charge to build hype ahead of the launch of its anticipated BlackBerry 10 smartphone in January and has been courting developers to write apps for the new platform which some regard as a make-or-break for the Canadian-based company.

Prezence argues that developing for the BlackBerry platform makes sense in a developing market like SA, despite several companies focused on creating apps for iOS or Android.

“It’s for this reason that while the focus for many other brands and agencies seem to be exclusively in the ‘trendy’ iOS and Android applications, we at Prezence Digital are always pushing our clients to also unlock the power of BlackBerry in South Africa,” said Tim Bishop, chief technology and innovation officer at Prezence Digital.

Telkom recently unveiled it app on the Apple App Store, but there have only been around 2 500 downloads in the two weeks since launch.
