Telkom app making steady progress

Cape Town - Telkom's bid to use mobile applications in customer engagement may have got off to a slow start as it has not yet had wide acceptance on the Apple App Store.

Launched on 22 November, the app is designed to improve customer service, Telkom said at the time.

"The App was designed and developed as part of a wide-ranging drive to improve customer experience by offering convenience and ease of use," Telkom said at the launch of the app.

The iPad Telkom app was downloaded 2 544 times, but the 8ta app had 18 034 downloads.

So far on the App Store though, the app has only received one review and a poor rating.

"What's the point?", wrote a user named PierreQ77.

The app allows fault reporting, the location of the nearest Telkom store, and is linked to the account balance, but some have argued that it would be useful to include more detailed information on the service to assist consumers.

Telkom said that the functionality of the 22.4MB app will be expanded.

"Functionality extensions for both the 8ta Data and Telkom application are under development - launch dates will be communicated when it is appropriate to do so," Telkom group communication senior specialist: media relations Pynee Chetty told News24.

Telkom released an Android app as well, and a BlackBerry app is on the way.

"All three applications are available on Android and iOS versions. Development is underway for a BlackBerry application - launch dates will be communicated when it is appropriate to do so," Chetty said.
