Cape Town - South Africans will access to expanded traffic information on the web and via real-time updates on Twitter, a mapping firm announced.

"TomTom released its annual Congestion Index in April and in addition to this announcement traffic information will now also be made available through TomTom’s Twitter feed: @TomTom_SA which will include details of exceptional delays around the country," Tom Tom announced on Wednesday.

The information on Twitter also features a bitly link to a map with traffic information and the company will tweet under the @TomTom_SA username.

Traffic information is already available on devices featuring mapping applications like Google Maps or Nokia Maps, but these have a data footprint that may not be appealing to users.

The TomTom service seeks to make the information easily consumable, and warnings of traffic incidents are clearly highlighted on the map.
