Cape Town - Online shopping has taken off the UK, with consumers migrating to online storefronts a survey has found.

According to a BBC report, online shopping in the UK is the highest in the world and the growth in smart mobile devices has seen the global maximum rates in data consumption.

According to Ofcom's seventh International Communications Market Report, Britons spend around £1 083 ($1 748) annually in online shopping, followed by Australia at $1 359.

Part of the reason may lie in the assertion that it is cheaper in UK, compared to other Western Countries, to buy communications services.

There is also an explosion in the use of smartphones and tablets and users download an average of 424MB of data, more than the Japanese at 392MB.

The survey also found that Britons are using smart TVs to conduct online purchases and the overall majority of 16 - 24 year-olds use social networks.
