Cape Town - Top UK hackers are in tight competition for a cyber security challenge.

According to a report on The Guardian, hackers are competing in a challenge to test cyber security in an even put together by Cyber Security Challenge UK.

The non-profit has partners with security company Symantic to test the ability of the UK's hackers.

Participants have to compromise the data of a fictional company to illustrate the importance of firms ensuring that their data storage methods are secure.

This kind of testing, known as penetration testing, is commonly used as companies make their systems secure and ensure the fidelity of their data.

However, many companies do not plan for an internet based attack which often leaves them as easy pickings for hackers. It usually takes corporations a long time to figure out that they have been hacked.

"Intuitively you’d think that if an organisation gets hacked, they’d know about it and they’d know about it pretty quickly. But the reality is that they don’t figure it out for themselves and on average it takes about 210 days before the detection actually takes place," John Yeo EMEA director at Trustwave told News24.
