Cape Town – A guide, iPad in education for dummies, that will help teachers and educators in setting up iPads for student's use, was launched in Cape Town on Friday.

Sam Gliksman, who wrote the book and is based in Los Angeles, is a leading educator specialising in technology applications for more than two decades.

According to him mobile technology can be used to re-envision education.

The book will help educators and learners to get acquainted with iPad technology, show them how to find and use apps, how to find and organise educational content, explore apps for digital reading and writing and how to express themselves with media.

Gliksman said with the iPad children in underprivileged schools can be introduced and learn how to play different musical instruments.

"Learners can also use the iPad to do stargazing and to dissect a frog."

Approximately 7 000 educators worldwide already form part of Gliksman's website also known as, iPads in Education.

Over 200 schools in South Africa already use iPads in their classrooms. Over 140  is private schools while 60 ischools are also making use of iPads through corporate sponsorship.

Wesley Lynch, chief executive officer of Realmdigital, previously told News24 that iPads are admittedly not the best solution for state schools, but there are Android alternatives that cost half the price of Apple’s products, and must therefore be considered candidates for a government-subsidised distribution model.
