The Chester Missing
23 July - 3 August 2013

Conrad Koch and his mad menagerie of politically savvy puppets, including TV celebrity Chester Missing, are currently on at the Baxter with their hilarious roadshow.

After honing their skills on national television show, Late Night News with Loyiso Gala, the team are back in front of a live audience with cutting-edge political commentary and laugh-a-minute antics.

Title: Sadako
30 July -10 August 2013 

Brace yourself for a unique puppetry production for both adults and children, based on the extraordinary life of Sadako Sasaki.

Sadako was a 2-year old baby when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. She survived but later developed leukaemia. When she heard the Japanese legend that says that if you fold 1000 origami cranes, then whatever you wish for will be granted, she began folding.

Her experience transcends culture and race; her journey of hope in a world of conflict and tragedy is a universal one. This is the winner of the Handspring Puppet Company's Best Production Award for 2011.

: Mark banks is Banksrupt

The line up kicks off with a comedy by Mark Banks. In recent years, there's been a large Mark Banks-shaped hole on comedy stages in Cape Town.

Finally he's back to set the stage alight with an all-new one man show, simply called Banksrupt. Years in the making, and in consultation with two wise men, a babbling gnome and Kobus Wiese, the show promises to be his greatest comedy work yet.

Title: Macstanley - Intimate & Unplugged

Cape Town chart-toppers Macstanley come to the Baxter for one night only in a very special unplugged session with some very special guests.

With their well-crafted lyrics, catchy melodies and the dynamic presence of band leader Andy Mac, you can expect an evening of well-rounded entertainment including a string quartet and some clever re-workings of their favourite songs.

As winter is slowly leaving and welcoming the month of August, Baxter Theatre has put together a tight schedule or a line up for you, the live entertainment fanatic. This unique play is highly recommended as it was sold out at the National Arts Festival.

This is piece of personal work or play titled Hayani presented by two rising stars. From the innovative Drama For Life team comes the drama Hayani meaning home in Venda. The play explores the concept of what 'home' really is in South Africa.

Atandwa Kani from New Brighton near Port Elizabeth and Ramabulana from thohoyandou in Limpopo, are weaving personal narratives set against the backdrop of the tumultous transition years in South Africa.

Title: Arianna String Quartet
When: 17 August 2013 

One of America's finest chamber ensembles, the Arianna String Quartet, returns to the Concert Hall to perform some well-loved works as part of their ongoing South African tour.

The group has fans all over the world and this season they return to play Mozart's String Quartet no.14 in G Major, Shostakovitch no.3 in F Major, Schubert's Death and the Maiden.

Cape Town Opera and the UCT Opera School continue their exploration of Mozart's mature works with a theatrically daring take on Don Giovanni, the world's greatest seducer who faces supernatural retribution when he goes too far.

Flaubert called the opera "one of the three finest things God ever made". The dynamic duo of Matthew Wild and Kamal Khan return to present Mozart like you've never seen it before.
