Pics: De Hoop Nature Reserve

Getting back to nature with the family is easy, head out to De Hoop Nature reserve for a weekend spent birding, watching whales and hiking along the coastline.

When: 02-06 October 2013
Where: Stanford, Western Cape

So grab your binoculars, camera, bird books, hat, walking shoes and sunscreen for a fantastic week of birding, demonstrations and expert talks. While enjoying the enthusiastic company of fellow twitchers, you can also soak up the charming atmosphere of Stanford, the Overberg gem that was nominated Village of the Year by SA Destinations Awards. An outing to the De Hoop Nature Reserve is also highly recommended, as it not only offers some of the best birding in the Western Cape, it is also known as one of the finest whale viewing destinations.

If you prefer live entertainment, the fascinating show of raptors by Eagle Encounters will grab your attention. There will also be a bird hide opening and the eagerly-awaited launch of ‘The Birth of a Wetland.’ The vision of the project is to prevent degradation, rehabilitate and sustainably manage the Stanford Mill Stream wetland, using birding tourism as a vehicle for social upliftment.
