Air Malawi in voluntary liquidation

2012-12-03 08:53
Air Malawi has entered voluntary liquidation following a decision by the Malawi government to restructure the airline.

Tourism Update reports that the appointed liquidator, Lekani Katandula, confirmed the news and will be responsible for handling all claims or debts of the airline as of November 14.

The government has decided to continue the airline's operations until a strategic partner has been identified to take over 49% of Air Malawi's shares.

A statement issued by Katandula said: "It is the intention of the government of Malawi to let Air Malawi continue its operations under the liquidator. This means all operations and other business partners, will continue to transact with the company under my mandate as the liquidator of Air Malawi Limited. This should give assurance to all our trade partners to continue rendering the necessary services to our airline."

The government of Malawi as the sole shareholder of the airline has also undertaken a guarantee to clear all bills incurred by the airline until the commencement of liquidation. Any subsequent debts will be paid from funds generated by the on-going operations.
