Air traffic controller makes stupid joke, gets into big trouble

2014-06-18 09:20
Atlanta — When will people learn that 90% of the time, when it comes to all things aviation-related, jokes are in bad taste and will almost certainly get you into trouble.

In the latest incident an air traffic controller at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport told a Delta aircraft not to land and to circle the airport before coming in for a second attempt. The Boeing 777 was about 1 000 feet off the ground at this stage.

Mashable reports that the air traffic controller followed his command up quickly with: “I’m kidding, Delta 630. After you land, I’ve got no one behind you. Expect to exit right.”

However, the pilot had already started turning the aircraft around by this time.

The air traffic controller is now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration for his little ‘joke.’

The FAA released a statement saying that the incident is under investigation, but that no disciplinary implications can be revealed until the investigation is complete.
