Airline plans to save by hiring only women

2013-07-01 15:08
Mumbai - Indian low-cost airline GoAir will only be hiring female flight attendants to save money on fuel costs.

Travelmole reports that the airline believes female-only cabin crew could save it 30 million rupees - around R5m - a year because they are lighter on average than their male colleagues.

According to Times of India the company's 132 male flight attendants will keep their jobs but they will not be recruiting any more.

It also plans to cut the size of its in-flight magazine and only fill its water tanks to 60% capacity to try and make the planes lighter.

Chief executive Giorgo De Roni blamed the Indian rupee, which has dropped 27% against the US dollar in the last year, for the need to cut costs.
