India - Smugglers gambling on the fact that first class toilets are not as over-used as those in economy, failed to consider the thoroughness of airline cleaning staff.

Travel Mole reports a a scam aimed at smuggling gold bars into India was discovered on board a Jet Airways plane at Kolkata airport.

Twenty-four gold bars worth more than $1 million (about R10 million at R10.16/$) was found hidden in the plane's toilet.

Police investigators suspect smugglers are targeting international flights that land in India, with a remaining domestic flight scheduled immediately thereafter.

The report alleges that gold bars were left behind by an international business class traveller for another passenger set to travel business class on the remaining domestic leg. If the switch had been successfully made the second passenger would have been able to leave the airport without having to pass through customs.

In another incident aircraft cleaning crew found 280 gold bars inside a plane's toilet after it flew from Dubai to the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka.

India recently also increased its duty on imports of gold jewellery from 10% to 15%.
