Kenya - The first ever commercial flight took off from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s brand new Terminal 1A on Tuesday.

ETurbonews reports the national airline Kenya Airways was given the honor to be the first.

"Flight KQ 762 to Johannesburg was checked in from the new terminal and passengers were able to experience the new glass, steel and marble building from the inside and able to enjoy the vast spaces which will mark the end of overcrowding at the present international concourse," a spokesperson for the airport said.

"The new terminal has a single point security check, also a marked improvement over the multiple checks in the old facility and notably offers passengers flying First and Business Class a dedicated access point into the terminal and of course with a number of dedicated check in terminals.

Kenya Airways also offers a state-of-the-art lounge for their premium passengers and, when fully operational, economy class passengers will also be able to enjoy much-improved boarding gate spaces, duty free shopping, and a range of restaurants from where to pass time until the flight is called.

Kenya Airways will operate up to four flights from the new terminal until all potential bottlenecks have been identified. The airport expects to begin full operations from August, when Kenya Airways’ partner airlines and other carriers progressively move to the new Terminal 1A.

This will mark the start of the refurbishment of the former Units 1 and 2, now named Terminal 1B and Terminal 1C.
