Cape Town - 'Give the pilot a bells!'

This was the general response on social media after the pilot of an SAA flight managed to land safely, despite severe damage to his aircraft and several passenger injuries caused by turbulence.

Flight SA286 was en route from Johannesburg to Hong Kong on Wednesday when it hit a suspected patch of Clear-Air Turbulence (CAT), which is said to be impossible to detect with the naked eye and very difficult to pick up with conventional radar.

The national carrier confirmed in a statement that 20 people (17 passengers and 3 crew) were injured on board. The airline said 18 of the injured people had been discharged from hospital, while the two who sustained serious injuries remain in medical care for observation.
