Flight MH370: Relatives informed by SMS

2014-03-24 15:38
Cape Town - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has told families of passengers of a missing Malaysian airliner that the plane ended its journey in the southern Indian Ocean, he said on Monday.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished from civilian radar screens less than an hour after take-off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 people on board on 8 March.

Shortly before Razak's announcement, Malaysia Airlines informed relatives of passengers aboard Flight MH370 about the aircraft's devastating end via a text message.

NBC News reporter, Adrienne Mong, tweeted the text message on Monday afternoon:

Unsurprisingly, relatives attending the press conference were in a state of shock, with many reports of screaming in anger at Malaysia's handling of the incident and shouting for space from the press.

Medical teams were on the scene to assist.

Sky News reported earlier that families of passengers have been booked onto chartered flights headed for Australia.
