Johannesburg - Hurricane Sandy has forced South African Airways (SAA) on Sunday to ground its flights coming to and from the eastern United States. The cancellation was immediate and would affect flights to and from New York and Washington, SAA said in a statement.

The flights that are affected are:

New York
SA 203 Sunday, 28 October          Johannesburg to New York
SA204  Monday, 29 October           New York to Johannesburg

Washington
SA 207  Sunday, 28 October          Johannesburg to  Washington
SA208  Monday, 29 October           Washington to Johannesburg

Passengers affected by the cancellations can approach the airline's call centre or ticket offices for help. Customers will be offered a full refund, waiver of flight change fees or a waiver of cancellation and administrative fees.

SAA warned that this offer must be taken up by Wednesday and asked customers to note the following:

•    this allowance will apply to South African Airways tickets only, i.e. 083 ticket numbers and not on any other airline tickets or separate tickets held; and
•    the offer must be taken up and tickets re-issued through an SAA office by 31 October 2012. If customers are opting to travel on a later date such travel must commence on/before 02 November 2012.
