International visitors being treated to free calls after landing in SA

2014-07-04 08:20
Cape Town - The priority after landing in a foreign country is always to let loved ones know you have arrived safely - and now Virgin Atlantic passengers from the UK can do so for free when landing at OR Tambo International in Johannesburg.

For the month of July, passengers arriving on the daily Virgin Atlantic flight from London, Heathrow, to OR Tambo International will be able to phone home for free, while they wait for their luggage to arrive.

Virgin Atlantic announced in a press release that it wants to get rid of the hassle of trying to connect and find a SIM card in an unfamiliar airport.

Virgin Mobile have teamed up with Virgin Atlantic to provide the airlines 300 daily passengers landing in Johannesburg with a free Virgin Mobile SIM, pre-loaded with R20 airtime and 100 MBs data to get talking, texting and sharing in South Africa.

Virgin says it makes sense for passengers to connect locally, on local rates, rather than paying higher rates when using international roaming.

While other operators have stores inside the airport, Virgin Mobile promoters will be handing out information leaflets as passengers disembark from the flight and stationing their promoters and RICA agents inside the baggage claim hall.

“We know how important it is to connect with your loved ones when you land in a new country, and we’re delighted to be able to offer our passengers connecting from London and the US to Johannesburg that all-important first call home, for free,” says Virgin Mobile’s COO, Jason Hair.

Competitive pricing to eradicate hefty roaming costs

- Virgin Mobile airtime international calling rate - R0.99 per minute - compared to the average international roaming rates are £1.45 (about R26.10) per minute.

- Virgin Mobile international SMS rate - R1.50, where international roaming rates will cost you £0.50 (R9.00).

- Virgin Mobile international data rates cost R0.99 per MB, compared to an average international roaming rate of £8 (R144).
