Lufthansa plane catches fire mid-air

Helsinki - A Lufthansa flight from Helsinki to Frankfurt was forced to make an emergency landing due to a damaged motor on Saturday.

The Daily Mail featured an image of the plane's left engine on fire after it exploded about 15 minutes after takeoff from Helsinki-Vantaa airport on Saturday, take a look at the image captured here.

Eye witnesses reported hearing grinding noises before a number of bangs resonated through the fuselage

The international airport in the Finnish capital issued a red alert, but the aircraft managed to land safely at Helsinki airport without suffering any injuries and the 162 passengers and six crew members were taken to a hotel.

The cause of the damage was being investigated, Lufthansa spokesperson Christian Gottschalk said.

A blast rocked the Lufthansa Airbus A321-200 and eye witnesses reported hearing grinding noises before a number of bangs resonated through the fuselage.
