New JHB Airport: 'Don't waste money'

2013-08-20 11:23
Johannesburg - The Gauteng Funding Agency has requested a feasibility study for a new West Rand regional airport in a report detailing its current and forthcoming projects for the year submitted to the portfolio committee on finance on Monday.

TimesLive reports the agency is formulating a case to develop a freight and logistics hub on the West Rand. But aviation experts have rejected the idea of the new airport, describing it as a waste of money.

We asked our readers what they thought. Most agreed with aviation experts, saying that there are more than enough airports in the greater Johannesburg area and that building an additional one would just be a waste of money. There also seems to be a general feeling that these funds could instead be pumped into a few proper upgrades for the likes of Lanseria.

A few comments also drew a comparison between this possibility and the multi-million Rand spend on building King Shaka Airport for the SWC in 2010 instead of just upgrading the old Durban airport.

Take a look what readers had to say. Have any thoughts to add? Tell us in the comment section below or send an email to

beannie - Lanseria is adequate enough. Don't waste money.

June Francis - With access to the Gautrain - JHB residents are happy for the airport to stay where it is.

Michael Tetley - Agreed. More cost effective to upgrade/extend an existing airport. Lanseria probably the best bet for now as it's far enough away from OR Tambo to maintain adequate air traffic separation, close to the burgeoning "north" market and good road links to the West Rand.

gavinspaztaylor - This happened in Durban a few years back. They could have upgraded the old Durban airport by simply renovating the runway (all they needed was the runway to be able to accommodate international flights for the SWC) ... and instead, they spent R1,6bn on King Shaka International, which is an inconvenient distance away from Durban, in comparison to the Southern location of the old airport. The mind boggles...

Richard Scully - Absolute waste of money...use the ones we have first

Peter-Jon Kitching - OR Tambo has recently been upgraded combined with the introduction of the Gautrain which stops inside the airport, so what is the problem? Ok, I am not an expert on this and don't know all the exact reasons other than what is provided in the article (time and lots of money was spent doing the feasibility study and I am sure some more money must still be spent in this regard). After much thinking self-debating with myself, I have arrived to the conclusion that emphasis should be placed rather on completing the Medupi Power Station.

Once this is done then by all means, revisit the topic if you must but in the meantime, please stick to one project at a time. I personally cannot afford to pay more tax monies and increased costs in order to contribute towards the funding of these bright idea projects. Roll on E-Toll..... apparently it has been decided for me that I don't need a savings account.

Jaybird - Use the some money to rather train young members to become pilots, plough the money into small aviation businesses, prevent wonderboom from running out of fuel every month, rather work with the aviation industry to overcome current obstacles.

Kenneth Corsar - Feasibly more people need houses than a new airport, just saying!!

Moabi Reggy Maeco - Mafikeng International Airport is just idling without any air traffic at all. Why not divert some of the cargo to this airport in order to free some airspace and traffic congestion in Johannesburg? It will also allow us the North West people to have scheduled flights as we are the only province in ZA not to have flights even though we have the world class facility.

Agent - Nothing wrong with Lanseria, it was developed over a 40 year span now I also smell a rat, someone wants to earn extra cash. Listen to the experts who are in the industry the know better. Rather get rid of the Toll roads payment suggested system.
