Plane lands on N7

2013-01-09 09:22

Cape Town - A light aircraft with only a trainee pilot on board was forced to land on the N7, the main route between Namibia and the Western Cape, yesterday when it ran out of fuel.

Die Burger reports that the stretch of road just outside Vanrhynsdorp was fortunately clear at the time of the incident, ensuring that the ‘precautionary landing' could be completed successfully and safely.

Koos Liebenberg, an inspector from the Jaffie flying school in Vredendal, confirmed that a trainee pilot was flying a Cessna172 when he realised that he would not have enough fuel to complete the flight between Saldanha and Vredendal.

Liebenberg told the paper that learner pilots have been known to face worse situations, and that it didn't pass as an emergency landing, rather a precautionary one. He added that there had been no serious injuries and that the plane was undamaged.

The Cessna remained stationary on the N7 for about an hour and a half. Once the aircraft had been refueled, the road was closed for two minutes, giving the aircraft enough distance to take off once more.
