Ireland –  European low-cost airline Ryanair is planning to tackle long haul flights to the United States.

Chief executive, Michael O’Leary stated in a Telegraph report that the move to long-haul flights would require a different business model, to the one applied on its single-class high-density European services

O’Leary revealed fare prices for flights between Europe and the US  may start from 10 Euros (about R134.92) excluding luggage and extras. The airline famous for charging for ancillary services such as baggage, might  even offer passengers free water and food considering the increased length of flights to North America.

The airlines' low-cost rival Norwegianfaced criticism from passengers on its new long-haul service from Oslo to New York after it refused to serve food or water unless paid for using a credit card. The policy, used on Norwegian’s short-haul flights, was abandoned after some fliers were left hungry and thirsty for nearly 12 hours.

“There is an opportunity with the EU-US open skies to, on a fairly big scale, connect 15-20 European cities with 15 of the big US cities almost from day one. But you need a fleet of 30, 40, 50 aircraft and not two, four or six," said the chief executive.

O’Leary added that a long-haul provision might feature a premium section like those offered by Asia’s low-cost, long-haul carriers such as Malaysia’s AirAsiaX, the Singapore-based Jetstar Asia and Scoot which is the subsidiary of Singapore Airlines though not yet launched.
