SAA acting CEO suspended

2013-02-11 21:32
Johannesburg - The Board of Directors of South African Airways has announced that after careful consideration of recent developments, it has decided to place the acting CEO, Vuyisile Kona on precautionary suspension.

The national carrier said in a statement that the action is based on certain allegations that have come to the attention of the board, in respect of which the board has a fiduciary duty to investigate. This suspension is effective from 11 February 2013.

"It must be stressed that the board has not come to any conclusion as to the veracity or otherwise of these allegations."

Kona was appointed in October last year, following the resignation of Siza Mzimela as chief executive and the exodus of 14 board members in September 2012, including chairperson Cheryl Carolus.

SAA is still in the process of recruiting a permanent CEO.

"The board is confident that this process will be completed by 31 March 2013, at which time recommendations will be presented to the Minister [of public enterprises, Malusi Gigaba]."

In the interim, the Board has requested the CEO of Mango, Nico Bezuidenhout to oversee the Group's operations.
