SAA appoints new CEO

2013-04-19 11:35

Johannesburg - South African Airways announced the appointment of their new CEO in a press conference on Friday.

Journalists tweeting from the event revealed that Monwabisi Kalawe had been chosen to fill the position of the national carrier's new permanent Chief Executive.

According to a tweet by Alex Eliseev, senior reporter at The Star, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba announced the new appointment, adding that "he's not a phantom. He's not here because still employed elsewhere."

Kalawe is currently the Country Managing Director of Compass Group South Africa, a food services company as well as the CEO of Thebe Tourism Group.

His appointment comes after the Board of Directors of South African Airways suspended the national carrier's acting CEO, Vuyisile Kona, earlier this year. Fin24 reports that the board said the move was based on allegations which it had a fiduciary duty to investigate. Mango CEO Nico Bezuidenhout stepped in to oversee the group's operations till such a time as a permanent CEO would be appointed.

While it's not clear when Kalawe will take office, he will start his term off with the huge responsibility of putting SAA's new turnaround plan into action.

"Mr Kalawe brings extensive experience in both the private and public sectors," Gigaba said, according to a EWN report.
