SAA flights not affected by German strikes

2014-03-27 08:47
Johannesburg - South African Airways flights to Germany will depart as per scheduled, despite the announcement of a pending ground staff strike affecting Frankfurt and Munich.

The national carrier said in a statement on Wednesday that SA261 from Frankfurt to Johannesburg and SA265 to Munich will depart as per the normal schedule on Thursday, 27 March.

They added that customers with onward connections from Frankfurt and Munich may, however, be affected due to the non availability of aircraft positioning during the strike period.

Lufthansa, Germany's biggest airline, announced on Wednesday that it will cancel around 600 European and domestic flights on Thursday due to the strike.

The giant services sector union Verdi has called for the walkout at Germany's major airports over a pay dispute.

It quoted media estimates that around 6 000 employees in Frankfurt alone would take part in the strike.

SAA has advised these customers to contact operating carriers during the day to check on flight availability

Customers without Schengen visas will have to remain in the transit area.
