Strange animal smuggling methods

You would never believe the things people do to get illegal animals across borders.

Antanarivo - A Russian woman was Tuesday caught at an airport in Madagascar trying to smuggle 50 endangered turtles, a customs official said.

The baby turtles were found inside a bag belonging to the 23-year-old woman, said the official at Madagascar's main international airport in the capital Antananarivo who asked not to be named.

The hatchlings had been wrapped with papers and placed among Madagascar artefacts inside her bag. According to her boarding pass she was due to fly to Moscow via Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi.

Turtles in Madagascar are among some of the most endangered in the world and international conservationists warn they could disappear within 50 years if poaching and trafficking levels are not checked.
