World's longest flights to cease

2012-10-25 15:04

Singapore airlines has announced that they plan to bring an end to their non-stop flight between Singapore and Newark, New Jersey - which at 15288.8 km is the longest unbroken flight in the world - at the end of next year.

The Telegraph reports that the airline will also be cutting its non-stop route between Singapore and Los Angeles - shorter in terms of distance but with a longer flight time. The flight time from Newark to Singapore is 18 hours, while the one from Los Angeles is about 2414.02km shorter but takes 18 hours and 30 minutes, due to trade winds across the Pacific Ocean.

The airline is thought to have struggled to make the routes profitable, with rising fuel costs and the current economic climate. Both flights were started in 2004 were run on an all business-class basis.

Once the Singapore Airlines flights are grounded, the longest flight in the world would be the route between Dallas-Fort Worth and Sydney operated by Qantas and the longest-lasting flight would be the 17-hour Delta flight between Johannesburg and Atlanta.
