Best beaches for 2014

Planning on soaking up the sun a bit more this year? You may want to plan a trip to one of these amazing beaches.

If physical activity, extreme sports and/or dangerous situations excite you, you’re likely to be an adrenalin junkie.

Your idea of a good time would be something like engaging in thrilling shark-cage diving, than sitting in front of the TV watching a movie.

If you’re a water-loving adrenalin junkie, here are a few places where you’ll feel right at home in South Africa:

1. Port St. John Beach, wild Coast

Photo journalist, Scott Ramsay describes Port St, John beach as the Wild Coast’s best kept secret. Rough seas, rock pools, warm waters and waterfalls, are but a glimpse into what you’ll find in this region.

Make the trip for potential Whale, Dolphin and Cape Gannet bird sightings.

2. Umkomaas River, Kwazulu Natal

Not exactly a beach but Umkomaas River can simply not be ignored for its thrill-bringing factor. Situated in the Mkomazi Valley in KwaZulu-Natal, what gets our attention is the 12- 24 kilometres of white water rafting with Duma Manzi. Unfortunately, riding these waves is only possible during the months of November to March. So plan accordingly.

For more information, go to: Duma Manzi White Water rafting.

3. Myoli Beach, Garden Route

According to Afrovibe Adventure Lodge and Backpackers hostel, Myoli Beach is an undiscovered paradise littered with adventure.

In-house activities include: Kite-surfing, surfing, wakeboarding, stand up paddle boarding, paragliding, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, beach volleyball and trips to the Bloukrans Bungy Bridge or White Shark Africa where one can dive with Great White Sharks.

4. Muizenberg Beach, Western Cape

Even though Muizenberg beach does not produce the biggest waves, and even falls short of Cape Town’s pretty-beach category, this 200m shoreline is one of the Mother City’s most popular surf spots, ideally for long boarding.

5. Blouberg Beach, Western Cape

Situated between Big Bay and Table view beach, Blouberg beach is renowned for annual kite-surfing event, Red Bull King of the Air. It’s where local and internationals go to experience the best wind-surfing and board-sailing experience.

Not to mention being a great place to view of new 7 wonder, Table Mountain.

6. Ballito Beach, Kwazulu Natal

Ballito sparks adventure with variety. With seven coastline shores to choose from, water sports like body boarding, surfing, swimming and scuba diving are common attractions.

Micro light flights are also available from Ballito Micro light school, with aircraft hire at R750 per hour. While using clean and fun in unison often serves as adjectives to something boring, the same cannot be said for this adventure beach, which has its main beach, Willard beach, internationally recognised for Blue Flag Status.
