Cape Town - Love Home Swap has compiled a list of the top 50 up-and-coming countries to watch, based on data from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Some of the entries will come as no surprise. Thailand's pristine beaches have long attracted crowds of backpackers and St Lucia is one of the Caribbean's most popular islands. However, the list also includes some unusual locations.

Iraq, for example, is widely associated with conflict and strife. Despite this, over 2 million tourists visit the country each year, and this figure is predicted to rise over the next decade.

But with a total of 16 Africa countries making the list and Namibia clinching number one spot for up and coming destinations - it's clear that for South Africans the Staycation trend may be well and truly dead.

Travelling to these neighbouring destinations certainly is cheaper and far easier than heading to Europe or the United States for instance.

Most recently, Tanzania scrapped visa requirements for SA travellers and local airlines are well-positioned to make the most of the expected uptake.  Fastjet has launched flights between Joburg and the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam and SAA also increased its frequency on this route, offering 12 flights a week in both directions.

SA Airlink commenced twice-daily flights between Joburg and Gaborone in Botswana from January.
