Australia named happiest country

2013-06-25 11:16

Cape Town - Australia has been named the happiest country in the world for the third time in a row according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Sweden, Canada, Norway and Switzerland follow shortly after in the top 5.

The index looks at 11 categories of life that make up a country's well-being, including health, environment, education, civic engagement, work-life balance and life satisfaction.

According to Brent Willie, Head of Sales at Global Visas South Africa, this promise of happiness is one of the big reasons South Africans choose to emigrate to Australia.

"Many of our clients looking to start a new life in a different country choose either Australia for its perceived high standard of living, or Canada, which although much colder has earned a reputation for being welcoming to migrants," he said.

Australia boasts a life expectancy of 82 years and according to the OECD "Australia performs exceptionally well in measures of wellbeing, as shown by the fact that it ranks among the top countries in a large number of topics in the Better Life index."

Willie recommends that anyone with itchy feet for new adventures take all factors into consideration before making the move and before deciding where they want to go: "No matter where you choose to migrate to you have to be clear on what the job prospects are for you, the general economic well being of the country and the cost of living in addition to any feel good factors," he says.
