A security lapse in which an 11-year-old boy managed to evade several security checks at Manchester Airport, has been described as an ‘extremely serious matter,' The Daily Mail reports.
Liam Corcoran was allowed to pass through five security checks before making his way on to a Jet2.com flight earlier this week. The youngster is thought to have passed through security in Terminal 1 after 'tail-gating' a family of holiday makers.
"It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate," a spokesperson for the airport said.
"The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised. We are now making preparations to ensure that his return to the UK is handled sensitively to avoid any distress," he added.
Liam had slipped away from his mother during a shopping trip at Wythenshawe Civic Centre and made his own way to the airport, according to the Manchester Evening News.
His unsolicited presence on the flight was only noticed when a few concerned passengers picked up on the fact that the minor was unaccompanied and alerted the cabin crew.
The crew alerted the captain who radioed back to Manchester, after which local police notified Liam's anxious mother that her son was safe and well, but on his way to Rome!
