Bulgaria opens first cross-country motorway

2013-07-16 08:56

Sofia - Bulgaria opened its first cross-country motorway on Monday, to link the capital Sofia to the Black Sea city of Burgas.

Work on the 360-kilometre southern axis - part of the Pan-European transport Corridor 8 linking the Adriatic to the Black Sea -- began in the 1970s.

The project was relaunched in 2004 with European Union aid funds and scheduled to be finished by 2009.

But cancellation of the initial concession led to delays in construction of the road's middle stretch of over 100 kilometres and put back the opening date by several years.

Bulgaria, the EU's poorest country, has just over 400 kilometres of motorways while two thirds of the remaining 19,000 kilometres of roads are in need of repair.
