Pics: Beautiful bridges

Take a look at this collection of breathtaking bridges around the world.

While some people may think of bridges as purely functional structures aimed at getting you from one side of some impassable terrain to another, others believe their form shouldn't take a backseat.

NEXT, a Dutch architecture firm certainly falls into the latter category, and recently proved their imaginative power when their design for a pedestrian bridge crossing Meixi Lake in Changsha, China was recently selected to become a reality.

The pedestrian bridge is one of the key projects within the Dragon King Harbor River development part of the vast development of the new lake district. Construction is scheduled for next year.

“The construction with the intersecting connections is based on the principal of the Möbius ring,” states Michel Schreinemachers. “On the other hand it refers to a Chinese knot that comes from an ancient decorative Chinese folk art,” adds John van de Water.

With a total span of more than 150 meters and a height of 24 meters, the bridge connects a diversity of routings on different heights.

The iconic appearance contributes to the developing identity of the area and with its lighting contributes to the whole light routing along the river. It provides both a view on the Dragon King Harbor River as well as Meixi Lake, Changsha and it surrounding mountains.
