Beijing - A Chinese airline has awarded cash and apartments worth millions of dollars to a nine-member crew that foiled a hijack attempt last month, according to the Huffington Post.

According to the report Hainan Airlines, the parent company of the flight operator, awarded the chief flight attendant and two security guards 1-million yuan (about R1.3-million) in cash, an apartment worth 3-million yuan (about R3.9-million) and a car. The other six members each received 500,000 yuan (about R652 000) in cash, a 2 million yuan (about R2.6-million) apartment and a car.

All 22 passengers on the flight will receive free lifetime airfare from the airline, Xinhua said.

Two men of the six men who allegedly attempted to hijack the TianjiinAirlines' flight from Hotan in southwest Xinjiang to Urumqi were beaten to death.  The crew, along with passengers and police on board managed to overpower the hijackers and tie them up with belts, allowing the aircraft to return safely to the airport.

However an overseas rights group is reportedly claiming the incident was a brawl over a seat dispute, not a hijacking attempt.
