London - Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on a residential street in Mortlake on the flight path to nearby Heathrow airport

According to Travelmole reports, it could be that the man had stowed away aboard a passing aircraft. The body was found on top of a car early on Sunday morning.

Believed to be in his 30s and of North African descent, the man had suffered multiple injuries and police believe he may have plunged thousands of feet.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson has confirmed one line of inquiry is that he was a "possible stowaway on a plane" as they await the postmortem results and identification.

In August a stowaway was found in the landing gear of a British Airways Boeing 747 that had landed at Heathrow from Cape Town. Airports Company South Africa confirmed that the man was seen jumping over the Cape Town International Airport fence. He had apparently run towards a runway where the plane was in its holding position, ready for take-off. Captain Dennis Adriao said the body had yet to be identified and was expected back in South Africa soon.

Following the incident, all international flights out of Cape Town International Airport after sunset are now being escorted before take-off.
