London — An emergency landing by a British Airways jet has briefly closed both runways at London's Heathrow Airport.

Airport officials said Friday that one of the airport's two runways had now reopened but that there were still delays.

BA said the Airbus A319 aircraft was carrying 75 customers and that it landed safely at Heathrow.

Airports Company South Africa confirmed the British Airways flight from Heathrow, expected to land at Cape Town International on Friday morning, had been diverted to OR Tambo due to fog. It could not confirm at this point if any other flights expected to depart for or arrive from Heathrow would be delayed.

"The BA762, Heathrow to Oslo service, returned back to Heathrow shortly after take-off due to a technical fault," BA said in a statement.

"The aircraft landed safely and emergency slides were deployed ...we will be carrying out a full investigation into the incident."

British Airways says an investigation is under way. The jet was surrounded by fire vehicles after it landed, and passengers and crew used evacuation slides to leave the plane.
