Vacations used to be a time for hardworking individuals to escape the 'noise' of their everyday lives. It meant leaving the telephone, PC and fax machine safely at home or in the office for a few weeks, while telephone booths, postcards and smoke signals helped everyone keep in touch with the outside world.

These days the picture looks a little different. Instead of switching off, many travellers tend to keep in constant contact with family, friends... and strangers using social media.
