You can start the dreaming process by checking out these lists of destinations for 2014 as suggested by the folks over at Lonely Planet - just the thing needed to kick-start your ambition to turn it into reality.

Top 10 cities to visit in 2014

1. Paris, France
The world's most beautiful city is said to be undergoing a rebirth, with a push to unclog its congested roads through 1.5km of former expressway on the Seine’s Right Bank now incorporating walkways and cycleways and the Left Bank’s new 2.5km-long car-free zone.

2. Trinidad, Cuba
Described as a time-trapped Unesco World Heritage Site, bulging with the best of architectural and decorative wealth from the 19th century, you can't go wrong here.

3. Cape Town, South Africa
The extraodinary Mother City is the Design Capital of the World for 2014. Need we say more?

4. Riga, Latvia
Formerly a strategic linchpin in the annexation of important lands pushed into obscurity by the Iron Curtain, the cosmopolitan cornerstone of the Baltic is enjoying its new found status after two decades of freedom.

5. Zurich, Switzerland
The city is set to host the European Athletics Championships in August 2014. Add to that relaxed rules governing opening hours, the locals are said to be reinventing the city's nightlife with the same enthusiasm they show for moving decimal points during the day". Just what you need for a slick city break, no?

6. Shanghai, China
Shanghai  has recently expanded its visa-free transit quota to 72-hours for citizens of 45 nations, so if you’re heading on somewhere else and don’t have a Chinese visa, you can still get a three-day look at its the world's third longest rail network as well as its twisting 121-storey Shanghai Tower set to house  the highest hotel in the world.

7. Vancouver, Canada
Head to Vancouver if you want a big city look, with a small town vibe. You'll be spoiled with the best nature has to offer, including world-class mountain views and protected beaches.

8. Chicago, USA
Here you get to check out The Second City, the club that launched the improv comedy careers of Bill Murray, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey. Festival lovers can also look forward to teh Wavefront Music Festival in July and the Riot Fest happening in September.

9. Adelaide, Australia
Often overshadowed by Melbourne and Sydney, Adelaide has transformed itself into the perfect host city. Visitors can sample some of Australia’s most popular sporting and arts events, including the cultural tour de force of the Adelaide Festival, the Adelaide Fringe Festival and WOMADelaide.

10 Auckland, New Zealand
Head to New Zealand's biggest and most cosmopolitan city for food scene said to be in the throws of a funky edge thanks to craft beer and food-truck dining - not forgetting to explore its arts enclave or coastal hinterland.
