Sydney - A solitary camper who was trapped on a deserted far-north Australian island by a giant crocodile admitted Tuesday to "hard-core praying" during his two weeks of reptile terror.

Tourist Ryan Blair, 37, was dropped off on Governor Island, 500 kilometres west of Broome, for a solo camping adventure.

With his supplies running out, the New Zealander readied his kayak for the 4-kilometre trip to the mainland. The arrival of a 6-metre crocodile sent him scurrying for safer ground.

"He was about 4 metres away from me and I thought 'this is it,'" Blair told The Sydney Morning Herald. "If this croc wanted to take me, it wouldn't have been an issue.

"I was scared for my life. I was hard-core praying for God to save me."

Salvation came in the shape of local fisherman Don MacLeod, who took a detour in his boat when he spotted a light on the island.

"He was relieved and shocked, and thankful someone had come along because he was running out of options pretty quickly," MacLeod told national broadcaster ABC. "He's a very, very lucky man."

Blair told him he was out of drinking water but was too scared to try and paddle off the island to find some.

"He said every time he got in his little kayak, which was only 2.5 metres long, this crocodile, who has lived there for many years and is a monster, has chased him," MacLeod said. "He was desperate for water when I trotted up."
