Mountain adventurer finds mysterious jewels atop French glacier

2013-09-27 13:12
What would you do if you found a cache of glittering jewels wrapped in bags stamped "Made in India", while climbing a snow-capped mountain?

This is exactly what happened to a 20-something mountaineer, who has asked to remain anonymous. He was exploring a French glacier overlooking the southeastern French village of Chamonix, which also happens to be the site of two fatal crashes.

CNN reports that in 1950 Air India Flight 245, also known as the "Malabar Princess" crashed, killing all 48 passengers on board. While the 1966 plane crash is the subject of a conspiracy theory around the father of India's nuclear industry, Homi Bhabha. The conspiracy suggest the plane was shot down by a fighter jet or missile.

The jewels, found inside a metal box atop the glacier, was turned over to police in Bourg-Saint-Maurice by the mountaineer and are believed to be worth €130 000 (about R1.7 million at R10.11/$) and €246 000 (R3.3 million).

French authorities are trying to trace ownership of the jewels but if the rightful owners cannot be found, the mountaineer could be given a portion of its value.

Debris from the wrecks routinely emerges from the bottom of the glacier and has included metal, wire and even a piece of landing gear discovered in 1986, according to a Mont Blanc tourist site.
