Namibia to host COP 11

2013-07-19 09:02

Windhoek - Namibia will host the 11th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP11 UNCCD), which will take place from September 16 to 27 in Windhoek.

Tourism Update reports that the event will have a positive effect tourism to the country. "Research has shown over and over again that delegates to international events of this nature are amongst the highest ‘per day' spenders," said Tour and Safari Association of Namibia (TASA) chairperson, Martin Wiemers.

"Our members in particular, and the tourism industry at large, are looking forward to welcoming the delegates from all corners of the globe to Namibia."

"I find it extremely fitting for Namibia, itself facing the threats of desertification, to host this conference, as this further solidifies our commitment to addressing the threats and challenges of land degradation," said Uahekua Herunga, Minister of Environment and Tourism.

Weimers believes Namibia's reputation as a world-class MICE destination is growing. He added that the country would host several international events this year, including the Adventure Travel World Summit, which takes place from October 26 to 31.
