Tight deadlines for ACSA Brazil airport upgrade

2013-09-05 09:17
Johannesburg - A consortium of companies including Airports Company SA (ACSA) is unlikely to meet tight deadlines for the upgrade of Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Business Day reported on Thursday.

The airport upgrade needed to be completed by May next year, only a month before the 2014 Soccer World Cup begins in Brazil, according to ACSA's latest annual report.

ACSA has a five percent stake in the tender, and was partnered by Invepar, a Brazilian infrastructure company, and Brazilian airports company Infraero. The tender was worth 16.2 billion real (about R70.4 bn).

ACSA managing director Bongani Maseko reportedly said he was confident that the deadline for a new terminal would be met, despite the fact that the property was only handed over in November last year for work to begin.

"Part of our commitment was the requirement to complete a new terminal, which is more than 80 percent completed, to have it finished in time for the World Cup."

There were concerns that failure to meet the deadline could detract from the state-owned company's reputation and impact its ability to win similar contracts in the future, according the ACSA report.
