Trainee pilot lands safely after wheel falls off

2013-01-07 09:32
Sydney - A 21-year-old trainee pilot was praised after a successful crash-landing in a single-engine plane that lost one of its three wheels shortly after take-off on Monday.

The Chinese national with just 120 hours of flying experience was talked down by his flight instructor after circling a commercial airport near Melbourne for five hours to burn up fuel, the Herald Sun reported.

Fire crews doused the Piper Warrior with foam for fear the plane would catch fire or set off a grass fire after it touched down using just its nose and left wheels before veering off the runaway at Mangalore Airport, 130 kilometres north of Melbourne.
