Tripadvisor joins American Express in unusual partnership

2013-10-09 10:13
If you're an American Express card member, you may want to consider joining Tripadvisor or linking up to your existing profile as the two companies have teamed in a deal they say gives you more power as a traveller.

Essentially you'll have to do all the work by posting reviews on Tripadvisor as an Amex traveller, but they swear you'll benefit by being given access to trend information and special deals.

While you're given peer or community recognition through a special ‘Amex Traveler’ badge applied to your Tripadvisor profile that has been linked to your Amex card, it's the collation of these Amex Card Member Reviews combined with the analysis of your spending habits that add value to the initiative overall.

Tripadvisor-Amex members will have access to trend information via the Amex Spend Graph on what hotels and restaurants other cardholders are booking. To sweeten the deal they've added in special offers and a $5 (about R50 @ R10/$) credit to the early birds who link their accounts.

Stacy Gratz, Amex vice president of digital partnerships told Toonz the deal adds "context and relevancy" for regular travellers especially when planning a trip.

A key benefit for TripAdvisor will be in increased verified reviews, after a spate of bad press about false review being published by accommodation establishments a few months back.
Gratz also addressed the issue of privacy, stating that no information in terms of card member details would be exchanged with TripAdvisor.

This is not the first time Amex has forged this sort of digital partnership with tie-ups, previously working with FourSquare, Facebook,  Twitter and Xbox. This Tripadvisor initiative is being launched in US, UK and Australia to begin with.
