Five baby elephants that were being held in captivity in Zimbabwe for shipment to zoos in China have been returned to the wild, Tourism Update reports.

According to the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF), the young elephants were being held in captivity by Zimbabwe Parks Wildlife Management Authority for the purpose of being sold to Chinese zoos. The decision to set them free came after ZCTF threatened to bring a high court application against the wildlife management authority.

ZCTF Chairman, Johnny Rodrigues, said the elephants were released from captivity at Hwange National Park. A sixth elephant, which was reportedly in the same boma, died before it could be relocated.

The elephants were transported to Umfurudzi National Park, a 76 000-ha reserve, where they will be released into a carefully planned rehabilitation programme.

Unfortunately three young elephants had already been transported to China, and are currently in captivity.

These elephants were separated from their families, endured a long journey, and exposed to freezing weather conditions and confinement. One died, as a result and the remaining three are in poor health.
